Thank you Jeff Hardy

I’ve been a wrestling fan since I was in my single digits age-wise. So basically I’ve been watching all my life. While some dismiss it as fake, I’ve always recognized it as a male soap opera, as athletic theater. I have a healthy respect for what these athletes do in the ring as well as the rigorous lifestyle of travel, appearances, etc. they endure outside of the ring all in the name of sports entertainment and for the sake of entertaining those that buy a ticket.

In my 20+ years of watching WWF/WWE, I have never witnessed the reaction that Jeff Hardy received upon his departure this Friday night on WWE’s Smackdown. We’d all heard the rumors that Jeff was planning to take some time off from WWE and had not signed another long term contract so the outcome of the “Loser leaves WWE match” between Jeff and CM Punk was not much of a surprise. What was surprising to me at least, was that WWE allowed Jeff to say goodbye to the fans after the match. He said it was “goodbye for now but not forever.” There were fans literally crying in the audience. People shook their heads in disbelief. Others in attendance chanted “Thank You, Jeff.”

Indeed. Thank you, Jeff.

Thank you for teaching us to march to the beat of our own drummer.
Thank you for putting your body on the line in some of the most spectacular spots ever performed and working through the pain.
Thank you for inspiring us to live life closer to the edge and to reject the ordinary in favor of the extreme.
Thank you Jeff for coming back after you literally lost everything you owned in a house fire.
Thank you for embracing your fans even though there were instances where we turned our backs on you.
Thank you for reminding us that it isn’t always the destination that matters, but the ride.
But most of all thank you for being
you.

The show must go on as they say but it just won’t be the same without Jeff. As is the case with most old souls, Jeff has many other interests besides wrestling that he wishes to pursue. Can’t say that I blame him although all his fans will miss him terribly. I’ve believed for some time now that with his looks and “it” factor he could be a decent actor. Should he never decide to return to the squared circle, I have no doubt that Jeff Hardy will never be forgotten by true wrestling fans. After a decade, he leaves the sport better than when he found it and that is the mark of greatness. Jeff Hardy, The Enigma, will live forever in all of our hearts. We love you Jeff. Be well.
